Renowned engine builder joins HMO Customer Racing

Renowned engine builder Rob Benson has been recruited by HMO Customer Racing for the 2020 carsales TCR Australia Series.

Benson has an incredible 40 years of motorsport experience, including stints in Australian touring cars with the Holden Racing Team, Brad Jones Racing and Ford Performance Racing (now known as Tickford Racing).

His time at the HRT included its popular 1990 Bathurst victory.

Benson has a rich international history, including time with Tom Walkinshaw Racing’s Jaguar sportscar and Rover touring car programs. He also spent time in the United States working with the likes of Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt Incorporated in NASCAR during the 2000s.

Since 2016, Benson has worked with German-based Hyundai Motorsport’s WRC program.

The Sydney-based HMO Customer Racing team made the announcement via social media this morning.

“We are pleased to announce Rob Benson has joined HMO Customer Racing,” said the team’s social media statement.

“Rob most recently ran the WRC engine workshop team for Hyundai Motorsport and has over 20 years experience in top level motorsport in Australia, Europe and the United States.”

The team will run two cars in 2020 for reigning series champion Will Brown, as well as Nathan Morcom.

There will be other Hyundai i30s in the field, including for new privateer entrant Michael King.

TCR Australia will host an official pre-season test day at Winton Raceway this Wednesday. Entry to the venue is free.
